This scholarship is intended for full or part-time (at least six credit hours) Lorain County Community College or University Partnership students pursuing an educational program at LCCC and/or its University Partnership that will lead to a career in journalism and/or writing, including (but not limited to): print, broadcast and sports journalism; creative writing; communications (including marketing communications); public relations; and multimedia. Preference will be given to students who are involved in clubs or programs pertaining to journalism and/or writing on LCCC’s campus such as “The Collegian,” Duck Radio, The Society of Professional Journalists, or any future club/program pertaining to journalism and/or writing such as television broadcasting. However, students not involved in such clubs or programs should not hesitate to apply for this scholarship. The scholarship may be renewed as long as the student remains in good standing, meets the criteria and resubmits an application.
Scholarship funds will cover tuition, required fees, special fees (i.e., lab), required textbooks, and the following supplies: notebooks, pens, study guides, and calculators. Funding excludes computers, iPads, tablets, smartphones, and other electronic equipment; transportation or personal expenses; room and board expenses; and loan fees. In the event no student is eligible for the scholarship, a portion of the scholarship may be awarded to a second year student who meets the criteria above and is interested in attending the College Media Advisers Conference or similar journalism conference. The award can be used for registration only. Any funds not expended must revert back to The John G. Cole Memorial Scholarship Fund in Journalism and Writing.
